“And what if I demanded a recount and it turned out that despite the vote fraud, Kennedy had still won? Charges of “sore loser” would follow me through history and remove any possibility of a further political career.” – Richard M. Nixon to Hugh Hefner in 1968…
Excuse me? Richard Nixon? This must be before entitlement became all the rage!
It’s easy to forget but in the 1960 Presidential Election, Richard M. Nixon lost to John F. Kennedy. The loss happened in the closest political contest in American History, thus far, period. Kennedy garnered 49.7% of the vote to Nixon’s 49.6%, a difference of one tenth of one percent. I guess your vote counts, right?
True or not, many in the Nixon camp suspected voter fraud, including former President Dwight Eisenhower as well as key Democrats. Fraud was especially suspected in Illinois and Texas, home of Mayor Richard Daley and Vice Presidential nominee, Senator Lyndon Johnson, respectively. These guys were no joke as far as influence went, hence the suspicions.
On November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy was murdered and we have lionized him ever since so the question got buried, only coming up from time to time. To be sure, I’m not asking if fraud was committed. The results have been combed over time and again, and I have a different question.
In 1960, Nixon had a Constitutional right to demand a recount. A right, not a privilege, as the election was within one percentage point. However, within 24 hours, Nixon conceded and three days later, he gave a speech explaining that it would not be good for the country to hold up the democratic process with a recount.
Maybe his concern was not possessed of the most altruistic of motives but seriously, what the hell happened to dignity? Where did it go? Nixon was concerned about what was good for the country? Really? If that happened today, how do you think it would have turned out? You know how…Her name is Hilary Clinton.
It was sad to see but when Nixon finally became president, in 1968, he allowed fear, paranoia and basic amorality to destroy a pretty phenomenal list of achievements in his presidential legacy. the EPA Act, the HMO Act, the Consumer Product Safety Act…he did a lot of good…The Watergate break-ins and subsequent cover-up, led to his inevitable resignation, lest he face certain impeachment and conviction. Can you say bye-bye library? He had to resign as he didn’t just “tape.” Planning to blow up the Brookings Institute and frame Ted Kennedy is well, not good…

Still, given 1960, “Why aren’t we taking more personal development lessons from ‘Tricky Dick’ Nixon?”
In 2000, George W. Bush and Al Gore had a bitterly contested election go to the U.S. Supreme Court. Recount or not, I don’t care about who was “right” as both sides came off like spoiled children and were more about themselves than anything and it was obvious. I can say this with a relative sense of objectivity as I didn’t vote for either guy. Both were entitled pansies, “My daddy said I could be president, so there!” said one camp. “Well, so did mine!” retorted the other camp and so says my lawyer…you get the basic gist.
In my view, both wanted what was good for them and not so much the country. They both lawyered up as both plead their cases on television. Now, both right and left have their reasons why their guy should have won. Both have anecdotal evidence how one side stole, or was denied, the presidency.
Fair enough but I posit this; would our lives be any better with either guy? They were both such a dead tie, such mediocre candidates, in the public eye, that even the vice president in one of the most popular administrations of the last half century could not muster even a five point victory. But fought they did; neither side caring for the “good of the country” or the charge of “sore loser.” Sadly, we all know the rest of the story. If you can tell me, with a straight face, that one was better, you’re just a partisan hack and would vote for Polpot.
In 2010, Lisa Murkowski was defeated in the Republican primary for the Alaska Senate seat so she ran as an independent. Joe Miller, the Tea Party favorite, was crowing about his impending victory in the general election. After all, Murkowski was the incumbent Senator and as per usual with this bullshit, was the perceived problem with the country. Mind you, the whole country, not just Alaska. Well, a funny thing happened on the way to November; Lisa Murkowski’s write-in campaign was successful and she beat Miller by a slight margin. The last person to pull this off was Strom Thurmond in 1954.
As soon as the results started coming in Miller, a former judge, started issuing lawsuits, trying to discredit the validity of the write-in ballots. The case he made was that write-ins should not count, the main point being that people could not spell her name right. Variations of the spelling, incorrect as they were, still weren’t your name, Joe Miller! They weren’t voting for Tyler Durden either! So I guess the votes would be pretty goddamned valid as long as they were in the vicinity of oh, say LISA MURKOWSKI! If they were writing in your name, you may have, well, you know, won?
I could go on and on as the last thirty plus years has seen us de-evolve into one entitled, sniveling nation under douchebaggery. This is done without shame or irony either. We have fallen into such a quagmire of entitlement that it’s rightfully terrifying. It’s not just elections either. Kids see this and they think, “Yeah, I can threaten my teacher with a lawsuit, because even though I set Sally’s hair on fire, my rights were violated with a suspension and now I’m traumatized.”
Much has been made over the last 40 plus years about “losing our innocence.” I don’t believe any such thing. To lose it would imply having it, to begin with. We’re humans, ergo, we’re not innocent; one man’s “good old days,” are another man’s “wrong end of the rope” days. So there’s that.
Even last year’s DNC primary was a parade of obnoxious entitlement when Queen Hilary showed up to her coronation at the DNC Convention. Not a conspiracy theory, as Wikileaks exposed the DNC cheated a bona fide progressive with the nomination of a corporatist warmonger, bribed, Wall St. backed, union busting, frack freak hack that full throated got us into Iraq along with George W. Bush and the Washington Post. I care not one wit about how you feel about Sanders. However, the facts are that after a full year of Russian “collusion” investigation (because saying conspiracy makes you sound nuts), there is still no evidence of election tampering.
So I ask, “Why isn’t the DNC being investigated?” There’s actual proof there; 14 states investigated for fraud, evaporating voter rolls, keeping Bernie supporters out of the DNC convention and blaring white noise machines to silence supporters that did make it in.
So we get Cheeto Jesus and blame by entitled, finger wagging, duplicitous, shithead, millionaire comedians and blind so-called liberals. All saying that it was Jill Stein or Gary Johnson’s fault that Madam Head Injury lost. She lost to an entitled, racist, crybaby, thin skinned game show host because she couldn’t even come close to the empty promises he was making!
It’s the candidate’s job to come get my vote. I owe you nothing because you’re barely a notch above Satan. Nixon knew that and while he had a right to whine, he took responsibility…how novel…
