Liberals and environmental activists are howling over Trump’s departure from the Paris Climate Accord. You might have thought that they would actually do nothing except express outrage over the fact that Trump is putting U.S. interests first. However, California Governor Jerry Brown has gone behind the White House’s back by signing an agreement with China to reduce greenhouse emissions.
The specifics of this agreement include cooperation between China and California to create renewable energy, zero-emission vehicles, and low-carbon urban development. It would also provide for a joint working group to work together on improving environmentally friendly practices and invest in programs that cut carbon emissions. Basically, not only does this agreement spit in the face of entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, who is the CEO of the electric vehicle company Tesla, but it also furthers the liberal agenda of controlling the economy so that they can implement their fantasies of an environmental paradise.

It’s not even symbolic. The California population has never made a secret out of the fact that it is heavily liberal. They probably hero-worship the Chinese Communist government even though, like most communist countries, China has never managed to create the egalitarian paradise that Communism promises. California has taken its Communist China-worshiping ways and thrown it in the face of the federal government by signing an illegal pact with the Communists.
And why is it illegal? Article 10, Section 1 of the Constitution specifically states, “No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation.” This means that no state is permitted to go behind the federal government’s back and negotiate a treaty with another nation, as California has just done. Jerry Brown’s actions have been called an impeachable offense due to their unconstitutional nature, not that the highly liberal California government is likely to actually impeach him.
So on the face of it, this agreement would seem to be relatively harmless and simply the actions of a state that is known for being a liberal fantasy land. Remember, this is the state that hosts Hollywood, a city that inspires movies like La-La Land and wants you to believe that the glitz and glamor are normal for the entire state of California. In an ideal situation, foolish actions on the part of the California state government would harm no one but California.
However, if Jerry Brown gets away with negotiating a treaty with China, other states will see this as a signal that they can pretty much ignore Washington, D.C., and negotiate their own agreements with other countries whenever the White House takes an action that their respective state governments don’t agree with. While states may sometimes be justified in pushing back against the federal government when it wants to force something that is obviously illegal and unconstitutional by state governments, the whole thing goes south when state governments think that they can effectively declare independence without the risk of having a massive civil war this time. That’s when having a federal government at all, let alone a United States Constitution, pretty much becomes pointless.
Not that liberals don’t want you to ignore the Constitution anyway. They do it every time the Constitution becomes inconvenient for them. This is why having a conservative majority in the Supreme Court of the United States is a good thing. It can cut down on the worst offenses made by liberals who go haywire every time the Constitution becomes an important factor. In this case, Jerry Brown had better be prepared for a challenge to his illegal agreement with China. The Supreme Court may be interested simply so that it can lay down the precedent that states are not legally permitted to enter agreements with other nations on their own.
