A San Diego State University student reports that he has received death threats after calling for the university’s Muslim association to condemn the terror attacks in Barcelona. Brandon Jones had penned an open letter addressed to the SDSU Muslim Student Association (MSA) and posted it on Facebook. The MSA’s apparent response to this in a separate Facebook post refused to address the Barcelona terror attacks directly, instead expressing its support for “victims of white supremacy, nationalism, and terrorism. Our solidarity is what makes us strong and we must continue to work together to make our college campus a safe place for all students.”

So not only did the Muslim Student Association attempt to dodge the issue and try to make it about white supremacy, but other student groups such as the Young Democratic Socialists chose to back the Muslim group. The Young Democratic Socialists called the letter a “cruel and bigoted attack” on Muslim students and stated that the request was meant to imply that the MSA “will be considered terrorist sympathizers unless they condemn an attack they had nothing to do with.”
However, it’s doubtful that Mr. Jones’ request was meant to imply that the MSA was composed of radicals and terrorist sympathizers. It was merely a request for the MSA to show that it is capable of standing up against violence and for civilized behavior. The letter even stated that such a condemnation would be in the spirit of the school’s goal of creating “an inclusive environment for all students on campus”. It would essentially reassure the campus community that the MSA will not stand for such attacks and its members are capable of showing the same level of tolerance for difference as they would expect from other students.
Nowhere in the letter did Jones state or even imply that he thought the MSA was involved in the attack in any way. He was simply calling out the student organization for its apparent refusal to take a stance specifically on the Barcelona attacks.
Muslims around the world were quick enough to condemn an attack that they “had nothing to do with” purely because they disapprove of violence being done in the name of Islam. Within hours of the attack, the Islamic Commission of Spain and Egypt’s al-Azhar Islamic Center both issued statements disavowing the attack. So why should the MSA stay silent on this matter?
The death threats have come through various form of communication that included text messages, emails and phone calls. One anonymous threat sent by text message said, “Watch ur back every step u take. SDSU campus will be the war zone against u inhuman rats.” Jones has also heard that there will be protests calling for his resignation as president of the student Republican group.
On the flip side, the university has issued statements indicating that it takes the threats against Jones seriously. He has received calls from campus police and the Dean of Students, who both invited him to make use of campus safety resources if he felt the need to. Considering the wording of these threats, the campus would be well-advised to step up security efforts and especially watch for any signs of suspicious behavior coming from members of liberal student groups on campus.
Jones’ reaction? “I think that again it just shows the hypocrisy of the left when it comes to [violence].”
Jones isn’t wrong for calling for the MSA to condemn violent attacks meant to terrorize innocent civilians and tear down the values that make it possible for Western civilization to thrive. However, liberal organizations on the San Diego State University seem to be perfectly happy to tolerate the MSA’s absolute refusal to acknowledge and condemn the existence of violent Muslim extremists if it means that they can make themselves look like the “good guys” who are fighting for equality. This typical leftist behavior will tear down Western civilization more quickly than radical Islamist terrorists are capable of doing on their own if the rest of us are unwilling to stand up to them and make it clear that there will be consequences if they cross the line. So Brandon Jones is right for refusing to let the leftists shout him down and intimidate him when he’s actually in the right for giving the MSA a chance to show that it won’t stand for radical Islamic attacks.
